Off-site backups to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox
Sending your backups to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox. How connecting works, where the files end up, what we can see in your account, and what to do when the connection expires.
If you'd rather not deal with buckets and access keys, your backups can go to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox. You sign in with the provider and allow access, and that's the setup done.
If you haven't read it yet, Off-site backups to your own storage explains what gets sent and how many copies are kept.
Connecting your account
- In the Off-Site Backups tab, click Configure Destination (or Edit Configuration) and pick Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox.
- Set Backup retention (days): how many copies of each backup to keep. 0 keeps all of them.
- For Google Drive, you can change the Folder name. It's
MagicPages Backupsunless you change it. - Click Connect with Google Drive (or OneDrive, or Dropbox). A pop-up opens. Sign in to the account you want the backups in, and allow access.
When the pop-up closes, the destination is saved. There's no connection test for cloud drives, because signing in already proves we can reach your account.
If nothing opens, your browser blocked the pop-up. Allow pop-ups for the customer portal and click the button again.
Where the files end up
- Google Drive: in a folder called
MagicPages Backups, or the name you chose, at the top of My Drive. - OneDrive: in your
Appsfolder, in the folder for our app, underMagicPagesand then your site's domain. - Dropbox: in your
Appsfolder, in the folder for our app, underMagicPages/backups.
Leave that folder where it is. If you move, rename or delete it, the next copy may start a new one, and the copies in the old one are no longer cleaned up.
What we can see in your account
Only the files we put there. Google Drive gives us access to files our app created and nothing else. OneDrive and Dropbox limit us to our app's own folder. Your other files stay out of reach.
That also means we can't use a folder you made yourself, even if it has the same name. On Google Drive, a folder you create in advance is ignored, and we make our own.
Space
The backups count against your storage quota. Two files a day, with a retention of 7, means 14 files at any time. If your drive fills up, the copy fails, and you get the usual email.
When the connection expires
Connections to cloud drives can expire, and you can end them yourself by removing our app's access in your account settings.
When that happens, the copy fails and you get an email telling you to reconnect. The Off-Site Backups tab shows a Reconnect button next to your destination. Click it, sign in again, and the next backup goes through. If the copy was already paused after three failures, click Re-enable as well.
Disconnecting
Click Disconnect and confirm. We stop sending backups and delete the stored connection. The files already in your drive stay where they are.
To remove our access in your account too, do that in your Google, Microsoft or Dropbox account settings, under connected or third-party apps.
